Vogelbeobachtungen und ökologische Safaris in Kenya

Even if you are a novice bird watcher, Kenya is the most ideal place to discover the joys of ornithology. Kenya boasts the second highest bird count in Africa numbering over 1100 species, with a wide variety of habitats a keen birder can achieve sightings of over 700 species in the space of a week or so.

The prevailing record stands at 826 species for 26 days.
Not only are about ½ of Africa’s birds represented in Kenya but the record-breaking lists of birds seen in 24 hours -342 birds species. Whether you are looking forward to thousands of waders at Mida Creek the flamingo spectacle at lake Nakuru, Hunter’s Cisticola or Aberdare Cisticola in the Aberdares, or Great Blue Turaco in Kakamega forest the excitement of your first local bird will remain unparalleled as you find birds wherever you travel, bear in mind it is not unusual for a bird group to spot 300-600 bird species on a tour or more than 100 species at a single site. Special 1: 6 Nights/7 Days - Kenyan Highlands and Rift Valley

DAY 1:
Arrival at J.K.I.A. morning hours then leave for Sandai cottages in central Kenya Highlands, lunch at the farm and a bird walk in the farm later in the afternoon, meals and overnight stay at SANDAI

DAY 2: SANDAI - LAKE NAIVASHA:
After breakfast leave Sandai for the fresh water lake Naivasha, Arrive in time for lunch at Elsa-mere then drive to Hells Gate National park, where you get first hand impression on steep Rock Cliffs in which Ruppel’s Griffon Vultures and at times Bearded Vultures nests, other sightings might include Common Ostrich, Schalows Wheatear, Verreauxs Eagle, White Fronted Bee Eater. Meals and over night stay at Elsamere former home of JOY & GEORGE ADAMSON.

DAY 3: CRESCENT ISLAND- Elsamere
Start the day with an early breakfast then a boat ride on lake Naivasha for the lake’s bird life, a visit to crescent island for big game and bird watching is a nice experience to have in the lagoon as you look for Grey Capped Warbler, Fischers Love Bird Grey Capped Camaroptera, Arrow Marked Babbler. Meals and overnight at Elsamere.

DAY 4,5,6 MAASAI MARA / 1 NIGHT GOVERNORS CAMP / 2 NIGHTS SOPA LODGE
Head to the worlds Wildlife Theatre Maasai Mara National Reserve with a record of more than 450 recorded species of birds. In the Savanna grasslands we will be on lookout for cheetahs, Grant’s gazelles, wildebeest, lions, birdlife includes all the Kenyan six species of vultures, Egyptian, Ruppels, Nubian Lammergeyer, Hooded and White Headed Vultures, Ground Hornbill, Rufous crowned roller, lilac breasted roller, sooty chat among other specialities like Pels fishing Owl, Ross Turaco, African Finfoot.

Day 7: Drive back to Nairobi in time for lunch, day rooms are at your disposal till 6 p.m time for a transfer to the airport for goodbye and departure flight.

Special 2: 7 Nights/8 Days Safari - Samburu, Maasai Mara

DAY 1:On arrival you will be met by the safari representative and commence your safari to the exquisite Sandai Guest cottages and a bird-walk on the farm.
Birds to expect: Little Rock Thrush, Grass owl, Thick knee, Starlings, Plovers

DAY 2: SANDAI-SAMBURU
After breakfast, drive north to Samburu National Reserve and onto Elephants Bedroom located on the banks of the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro river. Possible sightings will be: Golden-breasted starling, Vulturine guinea fowl, Steppe eagle, Red-billed hornbills, Bateleur eagle, Somali long-billed crombecs, Orange-bellied parrot, Bat hawk.

DAY 3: SAMBURU
Before dawn, your driver and guide will be ready for the early morning search of hunting cats and birds of prey. Later you will return to the lodge for breakfast and your next game-drive will be later in the afternoon in search of
Dik diks, lions, giraffes, gerenuk, elephants, crocodiles, oryx antelopes…

DAY 4: SAMBURU-LAKE NAKURU
After an early breakfast, we drive south through Isiolo crossing the northern foothills of Mt. Kenya until you get to Nanyuki town. We will head west to Thomson’s Falls for its 237ft cascade, with a small stopover and bird-walk in the grounds then drive southward to Lake Nakuru National Park, home to a million flamingoes. Lunch at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp and a game-drive in the afternoon. Overnight at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp.
Here you can expect the Red throated wryneck, Lesser and Greater flamingoes, African fish eagle, Rust, African skimmer, African spoonbills, Cape teal.

DAY 5: LAKE NAKURU-MASAI MARA
After an early breakfast we will depart the Camp to proceed southwards. We will turn right at Maai Mahiu and ascend to the top of the Mau Escarpment to proceed to Masai Mara. Mara crowns the climax of every safari in Kenya for its breath-taking views, wildlife and birdlife wealth. Large game includes: elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes and predators like lion, leopard, cheetah and crocodiles completing the picture not to mention the spectacular annual migration of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles.
Lunch will be at Mara Sopa Lodge set at the Oloolaimutia Valley. After resting a bit a and perhaps a dip into the pool. We will depart for a game-drive in search for wildlife (BIG FIVE) and birds such as:
Southern ground hornbill, Sooty Chat, Red and Yellow-billed ox peckers, Cardinal quelea, Quail finch.

DAY 6: We will start the day with an early morning game drive, later return for breakfast, and then relax until later in the afternoon when we shall return to the wilderness in search of game and birds. All meals and overnight will be at Mara Sopa lodge. Birds to expect: Bare faced go-away birds, Magpies shrike, Golden breasted bunting, Black throated canary, African penduline tit.

DAY 7: After breakfast we will drive back to Nairobi where we will arrive in time for lunch at a restaurant before we later visit the Nairobi National park. We will have dinner at Safari Club Hotel where we will also stay overnight.

DAY 8: After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your scheduled international departure flight.

Special 3: 14 Nights/15 Days Birding Safari - Kenya Highlands, Rift Valley Lakes and Maasai Mara

DAY 1: Arrival at JKIA and be met by our representative and later drive to the central part of Kenya to Sandai for lunch and bird walk in the afternoon. Overnight at Sandai. Here you can find the Little Rock thrush, Grass owls, Red fronted parrot, Brown parrot, Green Pigeons, Scarlet chested sundbird.

DAY 2: SANDAI - ABERDARES
After breakfast we will drive to the nearby Aberdares National Park in search for big game and montane species of the Kenyan birds with a picnic lunch up in the moorlands. After an afternoon game drive we will leave for Sandai for meals and accommodation.
Here you can expect: Alpine chat, Beautiful sunbird, Jackson francolin, Aberdares cisticola

DAY 3: SANDAI – MT KENYA
After breakfast on Sandai we drive to Mt Kenya where we will have a bird walk from Mountain Lodge forest. Lunch will be taken at the Mountain Lodge. Rare species likely to be seen includes, Green ibis, Ayres hawk eagle, Montane white eye, Abbots starling, Thick billed seedeater. Dinner and overnight stay at Naru-Moru river lodge.

DAY 4: MT KENYA -LAKE BARINGO
We leave early morning for lake Baringo with a stop over at Thomsons falls for its 237 feet’s cascade. We will walk in such of Slender billed starling, Grey cuckoo shrike and Rock martins around the water falls. Lunch will be enroute and drive on to lake Baringo. Dinner and overnight at Lake Baringo, Roberts Cottages. Possible sightings of Hippos at night.

DAY 5: LAKE BARINGO
Full day at Baringo known by Ornithologist as “birds paradise” with over 500 species of birds recorded. Explore the lake and its environs, the cliffs and bushes species to expect include, Cape eagle owl, White faced scops owl, Hemprich horn bill, Olivaceous warbler, White billed buffalo weaver, Goliath heron, Verreaux eagle, Pygmy falcon... Overnight and dinner at Baringo, Roberts Cottages.

DAY 6: LAKE BARINGO- KAKAMEGA FOREST
We will leave lake Baringo after breakfast and head into an isolated equatorial rain forest that contain an excellent representation of birds, animals, plants and insect species. Two globally threatened species, Turners eremonela and Chapins flycatcher reside here. This forests avivauna is unique in the country and is also home to colobus and red tailed monkey among many other animal species. Dinner and overnight stay at Rondo Retreat Centre.

DAY 7: KAKAMEGA FOREST
We will have a full day bird walk at the eastern edge of the rain forest in search of African grey parrot, Turners, Eremonela, Chapins flycatcher, Great blue turaco, Cameroon sombre, Grey breasted illadopsis among others .
Lunch, dinner and over night stay will be at Rondo Retreat Centre.

DAY 8: KAKAMEGA - LAKE VICTORIA
After breakfast we will head southwards to the shore of lake Victoria for a bird walk at the Dunga beach swamp which is one of the most reliable sites in Kenya for the scarce and threatened Papyrus yellow warbler, Papyrus gonolek, Red chested sunbird, Sedge Warbler, Carruthers cistiola, Southern red bishop.
Lunch, dinner and overnight stay at sunset hotel.

DAY 9: LAKE VICTORIA - LAKE NAKURU
We will leave after breakfast and drive to lake Nakuru National park for the thousand flamingoes lining its shores. The park is known for its bird life and thousand of Lesser and Greater flamingoes. Other species include: Greater and Pink backed pelican, Red capped lark, African fish Eagle, Steppe eagle, Tawny eagle, Hildebrandt’s francolin.
Lunch at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp with an afternoon game drive.
Dinner and overnight stay at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp

DAY 10:LAKE NAKURU – LAKE NAIVASHA
After breakfast we shall leave for lake Naivasha the only fresh water lake in the Rift Valley of Kenya. We will have a bird walk or a boat ride in search of the African spoonbill, African jacana, Little grebes, Cormorants. All meals will be at Elsamere former home of George and Joy Adamson. Overnight at Elsamere.

DAY 11: ELSAMERE
Full day at the lake with bird walks and visit to Elsamere field study center, birds expected include, Gadwall, Spotted red shank, Black headed gull. Dinner and overnight stay at Elsamere

DAY 12: LAKE NAIVASHA-MARA
Driving to Maasai Mara which is regarded as the most magnificent natural theater in the world, being home to the highest concentration of animals and birds than anywhere else in the world. Birds expected include, Bateleur eagle, Buzzards, Goshawks, Denham bustard, Rock cisticola, Magpie shrike. Lunch, Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Sopa lodge.

DAY 13;14: MAASAI MARA
Two full days in the Maasai Mara in search of grassland species among them 12 species of Cisticolas, Green capped eremonela, Black coucal. All meals and overnight stay at Mara Sopa Lodge.

DAY 15: MASAI MARA - NAIROBI
After breakfast we will drive to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at Toona tree. There after you will be transferred to the airport in time for your international departure flight.
